A Dude's Take on Oscars' Red Carpet Fashion

Filed under: Features, Oscar News, AwardsGood news for the fashion inept: We're back with a dude's take on fashion! Here, with the help of a beer-drinking companion who insists on being referred to as Dude 2, we shall add a solid dose of common sense to these odd proceedings.

This means, mainly, that we will attempt to insult people who are poorly dressed, because that's what you're supposed to do when commenting on the red carpet, right? Right.

So, without further ado, here's what two dudes think of the so-called best-dressed people on earth. Continue Reading

'Tron 3' Viral Video Teases Potential Villain in Next Film

If you were one of those people watching 'TRON: Legacy' wondering what Cillian Murphy was doing there in such a minor, uncredited role, we're getting closer to an official answer. Speculators presumed immediately that Murphy, who appears early on during the ENCOM boardroom scene but is never brought back into the story, was holding his place for 'TRON 3,' for which he'd be the villain.

This makes sense given that he's named as Edward Dillinger, making him the son of the original 'TRON' villain of the same name (played by David Warner), and of course Murphy is often a bad guy these days. Now we get the next hint that Murphy's Junior Dillinger will be back for the next sequel: an Easter egg on the 'TRON: Legacy' Blu-ray (out next Tuesday). The following video features a conversation between the two Dillingers, including a vocal reprisal from Warner:

Ricky Gervais Asked to Host the Golden Globes Again (UPDATED)

Filed under: Movie News, Golden Globes News, CinematicalUpdate: According to Phil Berk, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (via The Wrap), Ricky Gervais has not been asked back to host. Berk says, "There is no truth to this rumor. We have not asked him to come back."

Hollywood might be obsessed with tired remakes and reboots, and they might also be overly fond of 3D, but one thing's for certain: They're skilled at turning drama into goldmines. This time, it's not pulling a quickly fading star back from self-annhilation -- it's applauding mischief-maker Ricky Gervais.

Some HFPA members may have been ready to have the Golden Globes host's head thrown on a platter after last month's ceremony, but they can't deny the success of his broadcast, and how his humor gave the awards program a needed jolt of adrenaline.

In fact, Gervais's second stint at the Globes was so successful that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association naturally wants him back. Continue Reading

'Buck' at Hot Docs: Move Over Cesar Millan, the Horse Whisperer Is Here

'Buck' is the kind of sweet, easily enjoyable film that grows on you. It might focus on the inspiration for Robert Redford's 'The Horse Whisperer,' but it doesn't have the Hollywood buzz. It doesn't have the media fervor of documentaries like fellow man + animal feature 'Project Nim.' It doesn't have the marketing whirlwind Morgan Spurlock and 'The Greatest Movie Ever Sold.' What it does have is heart, and a lot of it, as both an exploratory piece about one man's rise from abuse to happiness and success, and as a film that feeds on our interest in the communicative divide between human and animal.

There's a certain awe-filled curiosity that follows animal whisperers as they magically cross that separation and communicate effectively. In recent years, that curiosity has only increased as Cesar Millan ('The Dog Whisperer') travels across the U.S. taming the meanest and most unruly of dogs. 'Buck' follows Dan Brannaman as he travels across the U.S., teaching horse owners how to kindly and compassionately train their horses to obey even the most minute commands.

'Conan O'Brien Can't Stop' Review: Coco Unleashed in All His Bearded Glory

Now that Conan O'Brien's got himself a show again and Jay Leno's back doing God knows what on 'The Tonight Show,' one almost forgets what life was like just over a year ago when The Ginja Ninja started a Twitter account, grew a beautiful red beard and went on a comedy tour just to keep himself from going crazy as a newly unemployed talk show host. Lucky for us, a camera crew was there to capture that tour and now we have 'Conan O'Brien Can't Stop,' a behind-the-scenes documentary that chronicles all the ups and downs of Coco's life on the road in the wake of the biggest letdown of his career.

It ain't all pretty, but it's a whole lot of fun, so be cool, my babies, and hit the jump for the full review.

Alamo Drafthouse's Zack Carlson and Lars Nilsen on Our 20 Most Iconic Horror Scenes (#5 to #1!)

Filed under: Halloween, HorrorAll this month, we at Moviefone are revealing our list of 20 Most Iconic Horror Scenes -- a list we worked really hard on and argued over a lot.

Of course, not everyone is going to agree with our choices, least of all hard-core horror geeks. And so we'll admit, we were a little nervous when cult horror experts Zack Carlson and Lars Nilsen, of the famed Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas, offered to weigh in on our list. Would they love it? Hate it? Praise its genius? Rip it to shreds?

It is with great pride that we turn our picks over to Zack and Lars, who will be commenting on our list (five picks at a time) and then, after the big reveal on October 31, offering their own ranked lists of Most Iconic Horror Scenes. Whom will you agree with more -- them or us? Stay tuned and find out.

Stars and Filmmakers Tell Us: What Hollywood Needs to Change in 2011

During our time at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, we crossed paths with many different filmmakers, actors and actresses whose films were playing the festival. We thought it would be fun to ask everyone the same question at the end of each interview to see how the answers varied depending on the role they play in and out of the Hollywood system.

Check out the answers below from folks like Morgan Spurlock, Eva Green, Emma Roberts, Miranda July, Drake Doremus, Joshua Leonard, Jess Weixler, Lake Bell, Chris Kentis and Laura Lau.

And now for the question: What would you change about Hollywood in 2011?

"One completely original screenplay for every comic book movie or remake they make. One for one. They can still keep making them, but they have to balance it out with original work." -- Joshua Leonard, 'The Lie'

"I would have more studios financing documentary films. That's what I would change. It would be a great thing. Because we just sold this to Sony, which is great. Big Sony. And you know Paramount put out 'Waiting for Superman.' I think it would be great to have more of these places start making docs. I think they have the ability to popularize docs even more, to help push them into theaters. That would be great." -- Morgan Spurlock, 'The Greatest Movie Ever Sold'

"My goodness. [laughs] They need to be more brave, I think. I mean, the studios, they're doing a lot of action movies [that are] very visual and they should be brave, and, you know, I don't know. I mean, this festival is fantastic. It celebrates independent cinema, and I think if they could have more balls, that would be great. In Hollywood, yeah." -- Eva Green, 'Perfect Sense'

Cinematical Seven: Girl Gangs That Kick Ass

Filed under: Best Movies Ever, Columns, Cinematical

As the reviews for Zack Snyder's 'Sucker Punch' come rolling in (you can read Todd Gilchrist's take on it over here) the movie about a young girl who creates a fantasy world to escape from her dark reality got us thinking. Babydoll, played by Emily Browning, is the lead player whose sanity is in question. She empowers herself with a team of ass-kicking friends to help her find her way through things. Girl gangs who buck the system and take control aren't a new phenomenon, but as Moviefone's Gary Susman asked the other day, "Why aren't there more movies like this?"

It'd be an easy task to come up with a list of male-dominated movies where groups of guys bond through a shared experience -- some through the trauma and exhilaration of violence, and some that actually manage to be meaningful. The female spectrum of films like this does exist -- and while some revolve around a romantic plotline, others are just about a bunch of woman trying to find themselves and beating incredible odds to do it. Whether the gang arrives at that juncture through an exploitation, comedy, or documentary lens isn't as important as the journey. Here are seven films that take a variety of approaches and kick some serious ass along the way. Continue Reading

Federal Judge Sides With Warner Bros., Denies Tattoo Artist's Request to Block Release of 'Hangover 2'

Filed under: Movie News, AnnouncementsA federal judge in Missouri has denied famed tattoo artist S. Victor Whitmill's request to block Warner Bros. from releasing 'The Hangover Part II.'

Whitmill gave Mike Tyson the well-known facial ink that allegedly inspired Ed Helms' tat in the film; he claimed copyright infringement because the studio did not seek his approval before using the design. According to Whitmill, his design for Tyson is "one of the most distinctive tattoos in the nation" and he owned the rights to it.

"We are very gratified by the court's decision which will allow the highly anticipated film, 'The Hangover Part II,' to be released on schedule this week around the world," Warner Bros. said in a statement. "Plaintiff's failed attempt to enjoin the film in order to try and extract a massive settlement payment from Warner Bros. was highly inappropriate and unwarranted." Continue Reading

Five Things A Green 'Lantern' Fan Should Know

Saturday morning at Warner Brothers' Green Lantern Comic-Con panel, Martin Campbell, Ryan Reynolds, Mark Strong and Peter Sarsgaard answered fan questions and screened a few minutes of footage from the forthcoming comic book adaptation. Following their public appearance, however, which certainly had attendees asking for more, the group fielded questions from reporters at a hotel adjacent to the convention, revealing more information about the characters, the story, and of course the much-talked about style of the film.

Cinematical joined reporters for that press conference, and attempted to squeeze some substantive information about the film out of the cast and filmmakers. But rather than repeating material revealed in the panel, we've compiled the most important (and hopefully, interesting) answers so that by the next time someone is talking about Green Lantern, you'll not only be familiar with the proposed franchise but primed to celebrate its cinematic incarnation.

2011: The Year of Rutger Hauer's Badass Comeback

When it was announced yesterday that veteran actor Rutger Hauer would be joining Dario Argento's 3D adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic novel 'Dracula,' it was the final piece of evidence needed to prove that one of my greatest dreams was coming true: Yes, folks, Rutger Hauer is back.

Honestly, Hauer never really left; it's just that recent years have found the actor working in foreign productions overseas as Hollywood has moved on to a younger (and in most cases, blander) generation of stars. Sure, Rutger was never exactly an A-lister (although he did make THR's list of the 50 most bankable actors in the world in the late '80s), and he's appeared in his fair share of bad films over the years (e.g., 'Wedlock'), but he's an instantly recognizable face to film fans for his work in titles like 'The Hitcher,' 'Blade Runner' (probably his finest hour) and 'Turkish Delight.'

2011 is shaping up to be the year of the Hauer renaissance. Aside from playing Van Helsing in Argento's film -- which is perfect casting -- the 67-year-old Dutch actor also had two films appear at Sundance. Both were well received.

The first, 'The Mill & the Cross' finds Hauer playing artist Peter Breugel, while '80s-styled exploitation throwback 'Hobo With a Shotgun' casts him in the lead role as a homeless man cleaning up the streets with extreme prejudice. If that weren't enough, the actor also had a supporting part (starring alongside Anthony Hopkins, another actor who's played Van Helsing) in Warner Bros.' supernatural thriller 'The Rite.' New Rapid Test Tells Difference Between Bacterial And Viral Infections

Scientists are reporting development and successful testing of a rapid and accurate test to tell the difference between bacterial and viral infections. Those common afflictions often have similar symptoms but vastly different treatments - antibiotics work for bacterial infections but not for viruses. The report appears in ACS' journal Analytical Chemistry. Robert Marks, Daria Prilutsky, and colleagues cite the importance of determining the source of an infection in order to quickly start the right treatment...

New Method For Imaging Molecules Inside Cells

Using a new sample holder, researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, have further developed a new method for imaging individual cells. This makes it possible to produce snapshots that not only show the outline of the cell's contours but also the various molecules inside or on the surface of the cell, and exactly where they are located, something which is impossible with a normal microscope. Individual human cells are small, just one or two hundredths of a millimetre in diameter. As such, special measuring equipment is needed to distinguish the various parts inside the cell...

The Next Coen Bros. Movie Is About Folk Singer Dave Van Ronk

Filed under: Movie News, Coming SoonMusic has always played an important role in Joel and Ethan Coen's movies. From the Soggy Bottom Boys in 'O, Brother, Where Art Thou?' (the soundtrack of which went on to win the Grammy for Album of the Year) to Autobahn in 'The Big Lebowski,' the Coens make sure each film has a perfect selection of songs to accompany it.

However, the brothers' next flick may shape up to be their most musical yet. The two are currently working on a movie loosely based on the life of singer Dave Van Ronk and the Greenwich Village folk scene in the 1960s, according to an unidentified source in the L.A. Times. The source went on to state that Joel and Ethan were basing the film off of Van Ronk's posthumous memoir, 'The Mayor of MacDougal Street.' Continue Reading

Al Pacino and Barry Levinson Teaming Up for Philip Roth's 'The Humbling'

Because nothing creates a bond quite like assisted suicide, Al Pacino and director Barry Levinson will be reuniting for the upcoming adaptation of Philip Roth's latest novel, 'The Humbling.' After working together for the first time last year on HBO's 'You Don't Know Jack,' in which Pacino played Dr. Jack Kevorkian, this will be their second collaboration; their third effort, 'Gotti: Three Generations,' will cover the Gotti crime family.

Written by Buck Henry, Michael Zebede and Levinson, 'The Humbling' stars Pacino as a veteran stage actor who goes into a depression as he begins to lose his talent and his career declines. In an effort to get his life together, he moves to a rural farmhouse in upstate New York to hone is craft while striking up an affair with a much younger woman.

New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of May 31: 'Drive Angry' and 'Biutiful'

There's two decidedly different films due on the home entertainment front this week: For mind-numbing action post-Memorial Day there's 'Drive Angry,' the latest Nicolas Cage saga in which the star once again plays a hero facing impossible odds and impossible villains as he fights for truth, justice and a strong backend deal. Way at the other end of the movie spectrum is Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's very depressing (but ultimately uplifting) 'Biutiful,' which highlights a bravura performance by Oscar-nominated Javier Bardem as a conflicted man facing his own mortality in the seedy underbelly of Barcelona. Read on. Continue Reading

'Superman II': The Last Great Superman Movie Turns 30

Filed under: Features, Best Movies Ever, Sci-Fi

Forget Nuclear Man and Richard Pryor's computer hacker and Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor; for the last three decades, Superman's greatest movie threat has been irrelevance. It's been 30 years since the release of 'Superman II' (on June 19, 1981), the last Man of Steel film that pleased both fans and critics, and the last that treated the iconic character with the storytelling verve and dignity he deserves.

'Superman II' was notoriously taken away from its original director and largely re-shot by a director with a more comic sensibility, and yet the revised film worked so well that it remains a fan favorite to this day, one that's had an indelible influence on all the great comic book movies that have followed. Not even the sillier 'Superman III' (1983) and 'Superman IV: The Quest for Peace,' (1987) nor the reverent but airless 'Superman Returns' (2006), can dim the luster of Christopher Reeve's triumphant, poignant turn in the 1981 feature.

There have been countless attempts over the last 30 years to recapture the magic of 'Superman II,' with Warner Bros. spending hundreds of millions on efforts by big-name stars and directors to reboot the franchise, efforts that never came to fruition. Now that a new reboot is in the works (2012's 'Man of Steel') that will again try to erase the last 30 years of misfires, it's worth looking back at 'Superman II' to see why it worked, why the Superman saga stalled after that, and how the red-caped hero can recapture his former screen glory. Five Apocalyptic Scenarios Worse Than What's Coming This Saturday (VIDEO)

Filed under: Features, Hot Topic, Horror

If you've been living under a rock recently, we have some bad news: The jig is up. The game is over. We're finished. The apocalypse is upon us.

Yes, the day you've been waiting for is almost here. This Saturday, May 21, 2011, Jesus Christ will return to earth to kick things into high gear, according to a movement of loosely affiliated Christian groups, websites and radio stations that have mounted an elaborate campaign, including billboards, bus stop bench ads and a traveling caravan, all to spread the word. If you live in a major northeastern city, someone is probably standing on your street corner with a "Save the Date" sign right this very second.

In celebration of the End of Days, we've compiled the five best apocalyptic scenarios we could think of while waiting in line to buy canned goods and bottled water. In the movies, things always go down in a fiery jumble of aliens, zombies, nuclear havoc or assault by asteroid, but don't fret, fair Moviefone readers. Space invaders aren't coming this Saturday, the Big Man Upstairs is -- and he knows how to turn water into wine.

Watch the world get destroyed again and again after the jump. And even though this should be self-explanatory, be warned, some violent and disturbing content follows. Continue Reading

Why the Golden Globes Is Hypocritical to Condemn Ricky Gervais

Filed under: Hot Topic, Golden Globes News, Awards

As you've likely heard, Ricky Gervais has been banned from hosting the Golden Globes next year -- and quite likely forever.

But what you may have missed in the days leading up to his impressively hostile hosting performance -- during which he took jabs not only at Hollywood luminaries such as Angelina Jolie and Robert Downey Jr. but also Hollywood Foreign Press Association honcho Philip Berk himself -- is that viciously making fun of the proceedings is precisely what Gervais had planned to do all along.

Just five days before the awards ceremony, the 49-year-old British comedian told the Associated Press, "I don't think I went far enough [when I hosted in 2010]. Obviously not, because they invited me back. So, I'm going to do a proper job. And I guarantee they will not invite me back."

Added Gervais: "I'm going to go out there, guns blazing, like it's the end of the world."

This blunt mission statement -- and a few more like them leading up to the event -- make me wonder how anyone could be surprised by what happened during the star-studded event on Sunday. It's like that fantastic Chris Rock joke about the tiger attack on Roy of Sigfried and Roy. "That tiger didn't go crazy," goes the line. "That tiger went tiger."

Anyone who has paid close attention to Ricky Gervais' comedy career could have told you that something like this was bound to happen eventually. In fact, it's stunning that the folks behind Golden Globes -- who have bestowed three statues on Gervais (two in 2003 for 'The Office' and one in 2007 for 'Extras') -- could have possibly failed to realize what they were getting into when they hired him.

Just a brief trip down the memory lane of YouTube could have led them to the following highly relevant clip, from the spot-on series finale of 'Extras.' It is essentially a manifesto. Continue Reading

This Week in Movies: Sleds, Norse Gods and Hand Puppets

This Week in 1941: 'Citizen Kane' Sleds Into History

'Citizen Kane' may or may not be the greatest movie ever made, but it's almost surely the greatest cautionary tale ever to come out of Hollywood. Released 70 years ago this week (on May 1, 1941), 'Kane' was the story, as one character notes, of a man who had everything and then lost it, but it was also made by a director who was given everything and then lost it.

After his pioneering dramatic work in radio and on the New York stage, Orson Welles was wooed by Hollywood. He signed a deal with the RKO studio to direct and act in movies and have final cut, giving him unprecedented creative license for a first-time director. He was 24. Welles declared that a movie studio was "the best toy train a boy ever had," but he quickly ran it off the rails. Continue Reading

So Who Hasn't Ricky Gervais Infuriated Yet?

Filed under: Movie News, Golden Globes News, CinematicalSlip the word "Gervais" into that handy little thing called Google, and you'll be hit with a wave of drama. Some of it's true -- as those who watched Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony well know -- but for the most part, it's been GervaisGate, with a whole slew of hearsay, shock and awe.

At this point, it's hard to discern exactly where that line is between insinuated drama and actual drama. The only nugget we can really rely on is the fact that host Ricky Gervais didn't hop on a missile and perform a comedic kamikaze mission from out of nowhere. He knew what he wanted to do, and he made no secret about it.
