Superman and Lois Lane Break Up; Who Will Be There for Jimmy Olsen?

From ComicsAlliance: DC Comics Co-Publisher Dan DiDio teased a "reexamined" relationship between Superman's Clark Kent persona and Lois Lane in the relaunched DCU earlier this month, leading many to imagine a relationship that either hasn't happened yet or didn't manifest into marriage.

Today at The Source, DC confirmed that Superman's 'Action Comics' adventures will reflect a very different Man of Steel that sees him single, orphaned, flightless and sporting a costume that will evolve from street wear to Kryptonian-influenced armor.

What's more, his love Lois Lane will have a new gig -- and a new love interest -- at The Daily Planet. Continue Reading

Why Did 'Larry Crowne' Fizzle at the Box Office?

Filed under: Features, Hot Topic, Box Office, Summer Movies, New Releases

Here's a pop quiz that Universal would probably like moviegoers to take: What did you know about 'Larry Crowne,' besides the fact that it stars Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts? Anything? Why wasn't their combined star power enough to get you to go see it when it opened this past weekend? What else would it have taken to persuade you to go see it?

The romantic comedy, which Hanks also directed and co-wrote, cost a reported $30 million to make but earned just $13 million in its first three days of release, debuting in fourth place on the box office chart. That's one of the weakest openings ever for a film starring either of these two actors, both longtime box office champs.

There will be a lot of handwringing, both at Universal and among movie pundits, worrying that 'Larry Crowne' is a sign that Hanks' and Roberts' star power is on the wane, that maybe they're both getting too old. (He's 54, she's 43.) But both of those concerns are misplaced. Yes, there is a star power drain, but it affects all of Hollywood, not just Hanks and Roberts. The truth is, star power alone isn't enough to sell a movie anymore, particularly one as offbeat as 'Larry Crowne.' Continue Reading

Best Bad Teachers in Movies

Filed under: Best and Worst, Moviefone Canada, The Rundown

It's hard to imagine Cameron Diaz playing a teacher. That is, until you hear the teacher is rude, crude, lewd and hot for Justin Timberlake, which sounds more aligned with the roles we're used to seeing the goofy, action-loving actress tackle.

'Bad Teacher' hits theaters this week, and features Diaz as, well, basically the complete opposite of the passionate Ms. Johnson (Michelle Pfeiffer) in 'Dangerous Minds.' Diaz's Ms. Halsey is more interested in chasing the cute (and rich) new substitute, played by Timberlake, than she is in developing young minds.

Lucy Punch ('Dinner for Schmucks') plays Diaz's biggest rival for JT's affections, while Jason Segel ('Forgetting Sarah Marshall') co-stars as a gym teacher who wouldn't mind a piece of Ms. Halsey for himself. Diaz's greedy character will do anything to land JT as her latest sugar daddy, including saving up for a boob job to help catch his eye. Continue Reading

'Super 8' 86-es Competition: Box Office Report June 10-12

Filed under: Movie News, Box Office, Summer Movies, New Releases

At the box office 'Super 8' could have been a train wreck the size of the one in the movie, or it could have been a monster hit the size of... Anyway, it was neither. The film debuted in first place (which was expected) with an estimated $37.0 million from Friday to Sunday (which was a little better than expected).

Given the secrecy of the J.J. Abrams movie's marketing campaign (which took pains not to reveal the nature of the monster, à la the Abrams-produced 'Cloverfield'), its complicated premise (both monster flick and nostalgic homage to a childhood spent making home movies and watching Steven Spielberg films) and its lack of star power, it was hard for industry experts to guess how well 'Super 8' would open.

On the plus side: a wide opening on 3,379 screens (including several IMAX venues with surcharges), generally strong reviews, and fanboy fondness for both Abrams and Spielberg, who produced the movie. Predictions had 'Super 8' opening in the low 30s. Not only did the movie do better than that, but a handful of early Thursday screenings, cross-promoted on Twitter to help improve word-of-mouth, added another $1 million or so to the weekend's take, for a four-day total of $38.0 million. Trailer Park Tuesdays: This Week in Movie Trailers (VIDEO)

Filed under: Trailers and Clips, Movie News, Video, Coming Soon

Folks, we can hardly keep track of all the trailers that come out each week, and we cover movies for a living. To help you stay on top of what's happening in the world of "In a world ... " teasers, we are launching 'Trailer Park' -- a twice-weekly roundup of previews approved for appropriate (and, on occasion, inappropriate) audiences. We'll present long-lead trailers every Tuesday at noon, and previews for the current week's releases every Thursday at noon, so be sure to check back each week.

It's been a big week with everything at Comic-Con and all filled with real superheroes and pretend ones, but throw a couple haunted houses into the mix, Ryan Gosling re-defining cool, and the best thing that's happened to claymation since 'Gumby,' and that only covers about half of the trailers we've seen in the past seven days. Like we said, it's a lot to keep track of, but there's a lot of good stuff worth keeping an eye out for.

So without further ado, go right ahead and scope out the goods from July 18 through July 25. Continue Reading

Does Oprah Deserve an Oscar?

Filed under: Features, Movie News, Hot Topic, Oscar News, Awards

You get an Oscar! And you get an Oscar! And you get an Oscar...

Seems like the Academy is emulating its latest honorary recipient, Oprah Winfrey, in being unbelievably generous. Oscar officials announced yesterday that Winfrey is the winner of this year's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. She'll join fellow honorary Academy Award winners James Earl Jones and movie makeup pioneer Dick Smith to pick up her Oscar at the Academy's annual Governors Awards on Nov. 12.

Oprah's humanitarian credentials aren't in doubt. But why would the TV icon get an award ostensibly meant for people known for their contributions to the movie industry? Continue Reading

They've Got Your Back: The Ultimate Movie Wingmen

Tongues have been feverishly wagging since the 'Crazy Stupid Love' trailer broke, exposing us all to Ryan Gosling's incredibly ripped abs. As Emma Stone's character points out in the trailer, he looks Photoshopped. After the excitement of seeing Gosling's abs subsides, it becomes apparent that this is a wingman movie, with Gosling taking the dorky dad character played by Steve Carell under his buff, glistening wing.

Doesn't it seem almost counter-intuitive to think that a handsome wingman could help step up a nerdy man's game? After all, wouldn't there be a risk of losing all ladies to the hunk by your side? Particularly in the case of Carell and Gosling in the slated-for-July release 'Crazy, Stupid Love.' Wouldn't any woman who falls into their path be distracted by a) Gosling's perfectly coiffed 'do and rock hard abs and b) wondering what the heck these two are doing hanging out with each other?

Of course, there's a perfectly reasonable back-story that explains how the unlikely duo wound up on the prowl together. Carell's character Cal is heartbroken when his wife (Julianne Moore) wants a divorce, and he meets Gosling's character, Jacob, during a painfully awkward night out at a local bar. (Because really, what hot young bachelor doesn't want a dorky 40-something dad to pick up chicks with?)

Evanna Lynch Reveals Who Else She'd Want to Play in the Potter-verse (VIDEO)

She may be Luna Lovegood in the 'Harry Potter' films, but Evanna Lynch told Moviefone if she could play any other part she'd want to be ... Severus Snape -- if only she had the life experience.

"I think you really need a lot of life experience to play that role, and Alan Rickman does it so well

," Lynch told Moviefone. "I don't think anyone could play it as well. I just find him so intriguing. There's so many layers to him."

Lynch spent last weekend as a special guest at LeakyCon, a fan convention in Orlando, Fla., celebrating all things Potter. Along with her own panels and signing events, Lynch made the rounds, even joining wizard rock band Harry and the Potters on bass guitar at an evening performance. Lynch, who famously went from a fan of the series to a cast member, was definitely in her element.

After the jump check out our interview with Evanna, where she reveals what scene she wishes made the final film cut and plays Potter word association. Continue Reading

This Week in 1976: The 'Rocky Horror' Cult Is Born

Midnight may be the hour that Cinderella turned from a princess into a peon, but it's also the hour when Tim Curry turned from an ordinary actor into a queen.

Midnight is what transformed 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' from a flop into an institution. It wasn't the first midnight movie (John Waters' 1972 trash epic 'Pink Flamingos' got there earlier), but it became the biggest when it began running at 12AM at New York City's Waverly Theatre 35 years ago this week, on April 1, 1976.

5 British Actors We Would Have Loved in 'Harry Potter'

Filed under: Harry Potter, Moviefone Canada, The Rundown

Bill Nighy once famously complained of being the only English actor who hadn't been cast in a 'Harry Potter' film. Luckily for him (and us!), he was offered the role of Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour shortly after.

Though it certainly seems like every high-profile British actor

from Emma Thompson to Helena Bonham Carter to Alan Rickman to Gary Oldman has appeared in the franchise at some point, there are still a significant number of seasoned Brits who haven't dabbled in the 'Harry Potter' magic. (Vanity Fair even compiled a list of 76 venerable British stars missing from the films.)

Some absences are less mysterious than others. While most thespians would kill for a spot in the films, others have said they wouldn't be caught dead in the wizarding world of 'Harry Potter.' Most notably, Tilda Swinton has publicly declared her distaste for the 'Harry Potter' films, reportedly complaining that the franchise "fetishizes boarding school for children." (Sounds like someone didn't have fun rubbing elbows with Princess Diana at the West Heath Girls' School.) Of course, most stars would not echo Swinton's sentiments. As Nighy once told Premiere magazine, "'Harry Potter' is an institution in England. It has become a national cultural treasure." Continue Reading

'Bad Teacher' Review: Could Have Been Badder, Could Have Been Funnier

Filed under: Movie News, Reviews, Summer Movies, New Releases

Thanks to the likes of Ed Rooney, Dolores Umbridge, Mr. McAllister and many other epically awful instructors, the national education system has made going to the movies an outright blast over the years. Now joining their ranks is one Elizabeth Halsey in 'Bad Teacher,' whose classroom offenses give her profession nearly as bad a rap as 'Waiting for Superman' did. Smokin' doobies, beating on kids, taking bribes from parents -- you name it, she's done it. But as good as that all sounds from the outset, does it finally make corporal punishment funny?

Well, go ahead and hit the jump to find out. Continue Reading

How Would John Carpenter's Vampire Hunters Fare vs. 'Twilight' Vampires?

Filed under: Features, The Twilight Saga, Horror

John Carpenter, whose new movie 'The Ward' opens this weekend, has been terrifying audiences since the 1970s with such classics as 'Halloween,' 'The Thing' and 'Christine.'

His 1998 film 'Vampires,' though, may have arrived around a decade too early. The current

'Twilight'-inspired vampire craze would likely have shot the film well past its $20 million box office take. While it occurs in a much darker world than Stephenie Meyer's depiction of sparkly vampires, it should still interest Twi-hards.

Why? The 'Vampires' series is about various vampire hunters who track and kill evil bloodsuckers. Edward Cullen and his like-minded "vegetarian" family do much the same thing in the first three installments of 'The Twilight Saga.'

Carpenter and Meyer should think about joining the two series a la 'Alien vs. Predator' or 'Freddy vs. Jason.' Were that to happen, these are the hunters from 'Vampires' -- 'Vampires: Los Muertos' and 'Vampires: The Turning' -- that the Cullens should team with to take down the evil Volturi. Continue Reading

Our Favorite Scenes From 'The Hangover'

Filed under: Moviefone Canada, The Rundown

So, have you seen it yet? 'The Hangover Part II' opened Wednesday night, presumably to satiate eager superfans who just couldn't wait for a traditional Friday release. The original 'Hangover' is the highest-grossing R-rated comedy ever, so yeah, expectations for the sequel are pretty high.

This time around, the guys head to Thailand for Stu's (Ed Helms) wedding. Despite Stu's attempts to keep the days leading up to his wedding as low-key as possible, he, Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Alan (Zach Galifianakis) wind up blacking out again and waking up in the squalor of a seedy Bangkok hotel. Instead of losing Doug (Justin Bartha), the guys lose Stu's future brother-in-law Teddy (Mason Lee), a 16-year-old medical prodigy.

The central plot of 'The Hangover 2' is essentially the same as the original: The guys have a crazy night, lose someone and struggle to piece together what happened the night before -- all in the final hours leading up to someone's wedding. Continue Reading

2011 Miami International Film Festival Wrap-Up

Filed under: Documentaries, Awards, Cinematical, Festivals

When I was invited to the Miami International Film Festival, an obvious draw was to leave the cold Northeast for a sunny trip to Florida, even if I'd naturally be spending most of my time inside watching movies. I knew it'd be a little tough to keep off the beaches in favor of the assignment, however, and I was almost glad to find the weather chillier than expected. Did I eventually take in some cocktails poolside one day as I did some work? Of course. I'm only human.

The thing about the Miami fest is that its screenings are pretty much limited to evening show times. So attendees are able to hit the sand during the day, view any of 100 films in and out of competition at night, and then, if desired, still have the later hours reserved for the clubs. This year's event marked the debut of new executive director Jaie Laplante, formerly of the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, who upon appointment told the Miami New Times that the city's cinematic taste is for "a lot of passion, color, flare" and "works with grand emotions." 'Captain America' Yanks Top Spot From 'Harry Potter': Box Office Report July 22-24

Filed under: Movie News, Box Office, Summer Movies, Comic-Con, New Releases

Sorry, British wizards. It's time for an all-American hero to reign at the box office.

'Captain America: The First Avenger' opened at No. 1 with an estimated $65.8 million, dethroning 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2' and beating fellow Marvel flick 'Thor' by a hair for bragging rights to the biggest superhero movie debut of the summer. In its second week, 'Potter' plunged 72 percent to an estimated $48.1 million, still a weekend take that most movies would kill for.

A close race was expected this weekend between the 'Avengers' franchise launcher and the 'Potter' franchise farewell. Both movies were expected to earn anywhere from $50 to $65 million, with a lot of variables in play. Both films are playing in 2D and 3D versions, both are riding strong waves of promotional hype and positive word-of-mouth and both seem to have all-ages appeal. Plus, a sharp drop-off for 'Potter' was inevitable after last week's multiple record-breaking opening, while anticipation for 'Captain America' has been building for at least three years. This Week in Movie History: 'Blow Out' Blows Into Theaters

Filed under: Columns, This Week in Movies

Movie: 'Blow Out'

Release Date: July 24, 1981

How It Got Made: That 'Blow Out' got made at all was pretty remarkable. Its 1960s and '70s-style political paranoia seemed out of place at the dawn of the Reagan '80s. Its director experienced budget problems, its leading man couldn't sleep, and when two reels were stolen during the editing process, it required expensive reshoots using a different cinematographer.

Still, the result was an unforgettable, despairing thriller, one whose final echoes continue to ring today. It may have marked the finest work in the careers of director Brian De Palma and stars John Travolta and Nancy Allen. And its fans included Quentin Tarantino, who has paid the film homage in several of his own works. Continue Reading

New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of July 19: 'Limitless' and 'Take Me Home Tonight'

With the prospect of the final entry in the 'Harry Potter' franchise taking everyone away from their living rooms this week, the home entertainment studios are finishing out the month with less than stellar product. (Or is it that the first part of this year -- from which the home video debuts have been culled -- was less than stellar in the movie theaters? Perhaps a little of both?) Still, rising to the top this week is 'Limitless,' which actually turns out to be a gripping, involving thriller that allows Bradley Cooper to show his acting chops. But juxtapose that with 'Take Me Home Tonight,' a rote way-back-machine comedy that takes place in the late 1980s with aimless youth facing off against Wall Street yuppies seeking the one thing everyone looks for, no matter the decade -- sex (actually, love).

Rockstar Games' 'L.A. Noire' Becomes First Video Game Chosen to Play Tribeca Film Festival

The "video games as art" movement just got a huge boost today, thanks to an announcement that Rockstar Games' upcoming open-world title 'L.A. Noire' has been chosen as an official selection at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Today's reveal -- made in a press release from Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive -- marks the first time a video game has been a featured selection at the prestigious film fest. Somewhere in Chicago, film critic and "video games are not art" proponent Roger Ebert is shaking his fist at the sky in anger.

The news is not only a big deal for gaming advocates who've long argued that interactive entertainment is more than something for children, but also for Rockstar, the distributor behind the wildly popular -- and often much maligned -- 'Grand Theft Auto' games. Naturally, Rockstar founder Sam Houser is pleased. "We're thrilled that 'L.A. Noire' is being recognized by the Tribeca Film Festival in this way. It's a real honor, and another step forward for interactive entertainment."

'Beginners' SXSW Review: I Love My Dead Gay Dad

Filed under: Reviews, SXSW Film Festival, Cinematical, Festivals

This is 2003. This is Oliver (Ewan McGregor). He is an artist whose work nobody appreciates. This is Hal (Christopher Plummer). He's a cancer-stricken widower who has come out of the closet at the age of 75. He is Oliver's father. This is 'Beginners,' Mike Mills' semi-autobiographical follow-up to 'Thumbsucker' and an artistic effort that I, for one, failed to appreciate.

See, Oliver is fine with his dad being a homosexual, even if boyfriend Andy (Goran Visnjic) doesn't believe that's the case. He's more troubled by the implication that his parents had a loveless marriage over so many years, making Oliver all the more concerned about his reluctance to commit to a relationship while in his late 30s. Team Starkid Performs Harry Potter Hits at Weekend Convention

Filed under:

This weekend, Harry Potter fans invaded Orlando for LeakyCon, a four-day convention celebrating the world and fandom around everyone's favorite wizard. We've got tons of coverage coming at you from the event -- Potter costumes, tattoos and wizard rock bands -- but today's biggest ticket gathering was the performance by Team Starkid, creators of the YouTube hit A Very Potter Musical.

After the jump, watch a teaser clip with Darren Criss, who played Harry Potter in the viral video and also plays Blaine Anderson on 'Glee,' singing 'Not Alone' for the wizarding crowd. We've also got a few preview photos from their panel.

And the Winner Should Have Been ...

Filed under: Best Movies Ever, Hot Topic, Oscar News, Awards, Cinematical

Even if the Academy Awards weren't looming large in the foreground of film coverage this week, the Oscars seem to inspire ongoing debate over which nominees were duly rewarded, who was robbed, and which nominees should have joined the ranks of the also-rans. This year's competition is racing toward a photo finish, with pundits and experts predicting different winners with equally powerful logic, we at Moviefone decided to recuse ourselves from that conversation and focus on the far more important task of pointing out the Academy's many oversights in past years.

Without getting encyclopedic -- because, quite frankly, who couldn't come up with a different and equally worthy collection of films and filmmakers that should have won? -- we assembled a dream team of sorts of should-have-been-winners from the annals of cinema history. Notably, none of our bizarro-world winners below were even nominated, and yet they continue to overshadow (if not fully obliterate) the winners and even other nominees from the years in which they were eligible. Hi-Res 'Amazing Spider-Man' Photos Hit the Web

The first images from 'The Amazing Spider-Man' debuted in EW about two weeks ago, but now these puppies are in high-resolution, and sans the Entertainment Weekly logo.

Yep, now you can appreciate every seam on that new Spidey suit.

Mostly, though, we can't take our eyes off the portrait of Gwen (Emma Stone) in an unmasked Spidey (Andrew Garfield)'s arms. And how about that image of her tending to a shirtless Peter Parker's wounds. Is his secret identity blown? Are they seconds away from their first kiss? How long do we have to wait for this again?

Zoom in on these hi-res images after the jump.

Watch Team Starkid 'Get Back to Hogwarts' at LeakyCon (VIDEO)

Filed under: Features, Video, Summer Movies, Harry Potter

What do you get when you take more than 80 million YouTube views, add the fanaticism of Harry Potter fans, sprinkle it with catchy music and serve it up to an audience of Potterheads? The Team Starkid live experience, where the stars of the viral Harry Potter parody musicals brought the magic of their productions live to Orlando last weekend as part of LeakyCon, a four-day celebration of the Boy Who Lived.

The group first found success in 2009 with A Very Potter Musical, which went viral almost instantly, thanks to rabid Potter fans. They followed up with A Very Potter Sequel and the original production Starship, developing their own die-hard fanbase, many of whom made the journey to Orlando and waited for hours for autograph signings and lined up to be front row to see the Starkids perform selections from their musicals to a sold-out crowd Saturday morning, including songs like 'Goin' Back to Hogwarts,' 'Not Alone' and 'Harry Freakin' Potter.'

While the most well-known Starkid is Darren Criss, who had a breakout role on 'Glee' last season and played Harry Potter in the musicals, fans of the group were equally enthusiastic to see all the performers, who haven't performed Potter songs live together in more than a year. One fan asked Joey Richter, who plays Ron Weasley in the fan musical, if he would be her date to that night's charity ball. He refused only because he was already escorting Evanna Lynch, who plays Luna Lovegood in the actual 'Potter' films and was also attending the convention.

After the jump, check out our video recap of the Team Starkid performance, signing, fan reaction and general madness in Orlando. Continue Reading

Five Animated Monster Movies to Show Your Horror-Obsessed Kids

Filed under: Family Film Guide, Horror, Cinematical

In what may be the strangest concept for a kids' movie ever, Variety reports that John Davis' The Animation Picture Company has landed the rights to E.L. Katz's script for 'Zombie Pet Shop' - and they're planning to turn it into a 3D animated feature. You know, because nothing says "kid friendly" quite like seeing animated zombie puppies devour adorable non-zombie bunny rabbits...in loving 3D so you can almost touch the guts.

Katz, who's probably best known for writing the screenplay for Adam Gierasch's 'Autopsy,' is making the jump to macabre kids' movies with this tale of a mall pet shop infected with a strange virus that turns the animals into zombies. It's up to a spunky pug named Joey to find an antidote and save his friends.

While we have no idea how the pitch meeting for this went down, we like to think of Katz telling Davis that "it's like 'Dawn of the Dead,' only Ken Foree's part is played by a cute little pug I've named Joey!' How could anyone pass on a pitch like that? How awesome would this be if they went with a downbeat Romero-styled ending where Joey either A) never finds the antidote or B) finds it too late to save his best friend/love interest and the last shot is of him working feverishly to find a cure while his zombie pet strains against a leash in the background? We'd pay to see that.

This, of course, got us thinking. There aren't enough animated horror movies for kids out there - so what do you show little Timmy or Jane if they have a taste for the darker things in life? Here are five flicks for your horror-obsessed tykes. Continue Reading

His Best Roles: Ryan Reynolds

Filed under: Best and Worst, Moviefone Canada, The Rundown

It may have taken a while, but it looks like Ryan Reynolds has elevated his status from Canada's favorite sharp-witted pretty boy to bona fide Hollywood movie star. The former Mr. Alanis is headlining a major summer blockbuster, 'Green Lantern,' and he reportedly beat out some pretty stiff competition to land the role.

The 'Green Lantern' coup followed the surprise smash hit 'The Proposal,' where Reynolds proved he could co-headline a rom-com with the likes of industry heavyweight Sandra Bullock. Looks like Ry-Rey has mastered all of the genres that count at the box office, from frat-boy comedies to action flicks to rom-coms.

It's hard to think of another young actor who translates across genres so well. At one point I probably would have said James Franco could give Ry-Rey a run for his money, but he just may have worn out his welcome by trying to be a little too versatile. (More stoner flicks, less film school, Franco!) Continue Reading

Eugene Jarecki's 'Reagan' Documentary Debuts on HBO Tonight

Filed under: Documentaries, Sundance Film Festival, Cinematical

One of the quickest films to reach a wide audience following its Sundance premiere last month, Eugene Jarecki's 'Reagan' debuts on HBO tonight (fittingly, a day after Ronald Reagan's 100th birthday). And it's a must-see for fans of non-fiction film, fans of the 40th president, and even those critical of the man for whatever reason. Jarecki, whose last feature was the magnificently comprehensive 2005 military-industrial-complex history, 'Why We Fight,' may still surprise you with just how fair and lucid a portrait he has made about such a controversial and complicated figure.

He "was both smarter and better than the left think he was," Ron Reagan Jr. says in the film, "and less the giant than many on the right think he was." The son of Ronald and Nancy is a consistent presence throughout 'Reagan' (Michael Reagan is the only other family member to appear, briefly), and he provides some of the most personal and yet also some of the most unbiased commentary, quite beneficial to a work that means to iron out the mythology and iconography of a man typically viewed more symbolically than realistically these days. Even if you aren't a fan of Minaj, or rap as a whole, you can't deny that she is eccentric (see photo on right). While we still don't know what role she'll be playing in the film, we bet it will be something outside the box.

Though it was overtaken by 'The Expendables' at the weekend box office, many people still went to see Julia Roberts travel the world in 'Eat Pray Love' -- enough to make it her biggest box-office hit in almost 10 years.

But did it actually live up to the bestselling memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert? (Read our book vs. movie comparison here.)

That's one of the many questions we tackle in this month's Moviefone Movie Club. Also on the menu: Roberts' performance, Javier Bardem's undeniable sex appeal and how the 'Eat' section made us more hungry than we've been in years.

AMC Theatres Hosting 'Harry Potter' Marathon in Select Cities

For all you muggles out there who were so tragically unfortunate as to have missed the past seven 'Harry Potter' movies on the big screen, AMC Theatres has heard your cries and answered your prayers in true hardcore movie-nerd fashion.

Starting on Monday, July 11 and leading right into a midnight showing of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II' on Friday, July 15, at select AMC Theatre locations across the United States will be screening all the 'Harry Potter' movies back-to-back over the course of four nights. Going in chronological order from 'Sorcerer's Stone' on and carrying a hefty $45 cost of admission to sit in on the whole thing ($20 if you just want to see the two 'Deathly Hallows' movies), at least you'll also get a collectible lanyard and booklet that you can show off with pride to the guys on your intramural Quidditch team.

Sure, you could just and rent them off like Netflix or borrow them from any kid within arms reach, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime deal, folks.

While AMC will be screening the back-to-back 'Deathly Hallows' movies in 288 locations, only 35 theaters will be going through the whole shebang. So hit the jump to see the full schedule and visit the AMC website to see if your local theater made the cut.

On Demand Is Changing The Way You Watch Indie Films

Filed under: Documentaries, Movie News, Hot Topic, Summer Movies, New Releases

'Magic Trip,' the new documentary about Ken Kesey and his psychedelic impact on the 1960s, hits theaters today in New York City, Berkeley and San Fransisco (before rolling out to more theaters across the country over the next three months). However, the theatrical release is not the first time the movie is being shown. 'Magic Trip' has been available at the fingertips of viewers since its On Demand release on July 1st. It represents a growing trend of movies being released On Demand prior to their theatrical releases.

Now you don't have to live in Los Angeles or New York to see smaller, limited release films. There's a bevvy of off-beat indie selections that you can currently watch from the comfort of your home or enjoy on the big screen. But which ones are better suited for your couch, and which ones need a night out at theater? Moviefone breaks down all the summer movies available on On Demand. Continue Reading

Why 'Harry Potter' Is This Generation's 'Star Wars'

Filed under: Features, Hot Topic, Harry Potter

Spoiler Alert: If you aren't familiar with the end of the Harry Potter series, stop reading this and go see it (or read the books).

I am a huge Star Wars fan. Unfortunately, I had the rotten luck of being born in 1985, too late to see any of the original films in the theater. Everyone tells me how awesome it was -- how people were hooting and hollering when Luke blew up the Death Star, the collective gasp when Vader revealed he was Luke's father, watching Han Solo get frozen in carbonite. And yeah, I saw all the "special editions" in the theater when they were released in 1997, but the enthusiasm (from what I've been told, anyway) didn't come close to what it was decades earlier.

I was always annoyed that I missed out on those initial Jedi antics on the big screen. What's great, though, is that it doesn't matter anymore. Why? Because my generation has its own billion-dollar franchise to fawn over. When 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2' leaves theaters for good, I will finally have my own set of films to brag about. It's too bad for anyone who will be born at the end of 2011 or later: You have no idea what you missed! It was awesome! You weren't there, you wouldn't understand! Continue Reading

James Bond vs. Han Solo: Who Would Win in a Fight?

Filed under: Features, Hot Topic, Summer Movies, Comic-Con, New Releases, Sci-Fi

We here at Moviefone love a good debate, and nothing gets us going like an argument involving Star Wars. Lucky for us, the release of 'Cowboys & Aliens,' starring Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig, provides the perfect excuse for us to pit together two of the greatest characters in history: Han Solo vs. James Bond (aka Han vs. Bond).

Before we start, we will state the obvious: James Bond has 22 movies; Han Solo has but three. We've done our best to even the playing field by assuming what would happen if Han were in more. We will judge these two men on five different categories ranging from best shooter to biggest ladies' man. Can The Force halt 007? Will the vodka martinis drown Han in a sea of Leia-related sorrows? Check below to find out. Continue Reading
