Doc Talk: What's the Most Important Ethical Concern for Documentary Today?

What is the biggest ethical concern for documentary today? Yes, it's a BIG question. But it's worth trying to answer even if it's not easy to do so. Ethics are such a big deal in documentary discourse, probably the toughest topic to wrap our heads around, or come to many conclusions about. Panels and lectures on documentary ethics can be found at nearly every film festival and conference, and sometimes they occur at more random times and places, too. And none of these discussions ever finish with definite resolutions.

Last week I attended one of these irregular events, one hosted by The New York Film/Video Council and titled "Crossing the Line? A conversation on ethics and documentary film." P.O.V.'s Yance Ford moderated the talk, which featured filmmakers Albert Maysles ('Grey Gardens'), Tia Lessin ('Trouble the Water'), Stephanie Wang-Breal ('I Love You, Mommy') and Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman ('Catfish') talking about dilemmas involving underage subjects, hidden cameras and representations of character. 'Country Strong' Stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw on Being Bad and Sleeping With a Rock Star

Filed under: Celebrity Interviews, Unscripted, Video'Country Strong' co-stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw sat down at Moviefone to give us a unique look at two entertainers who have branched out in their careers. She's an actress playing a country music super star; he's a true country music legend who's taken to acting.

Paltrow had to learn to play guitar and sing for the film. When asked about the types of roles she looks for, she responded: "What doing 'Country Strong' taught me, is that the more I can challenge myself, the more fun I will have." She also learned a thing or two about country music: "I think what it takes to be a country super star is real soul and authenticity. (Like) I think in country more than any other genre, there can't be anything phony. It's all about revealing everything and not relying on tricks or kitchiness."

McGraw, who now has hits in the music and film worlds ('The Blind Side'), was asked which gave him more satisfaction, and responded by saying that he wanted everything to be a hit and, he wanted it all to be good. And when asked what he was bad at, he revealed that he's not a good listener. "But worse than that, I have no patience. But I'm learning."

McGraw took a break from sincerity and asked the question on everybody's mind: "What's it like sleeping with a rock star?" (Paltrow is married to Coldplay's Chris Martin). But Paltrow turned the tables on him (McGraw is married to Faith Hill).

When asked what he sings in the shower, he responded comically, 'Don't Cry Out Loud.' That's a mental image we won't be able to get out of our heads for a while!

10 Things You Need to Know About 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2'

Filed under: Celebrity Interviews, Behind the Scenes, Summer Movies, Harry Potter

This is a truly bittersweet moment for all 'Harry Potter' fans. While we all get to see the final chapter of the series (finally!), we also have to say goodbye to Harry, Hermione, Ron, and all of our other favorites. No more Malfoy, no more Snape, no more Hagrid -- how we wish there were a spell to counteract our sadness about this!

From what we've seen so far, 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2' looks to be an absolute blockbuster. When you get goosebumps from a trailer (not to mention the latest clip), you know good things are coming. Warner Bros. invited Moviefone to the London set of 'Harry Potter,' and we sat down to talk with Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), director David Yates, Mark Williams (Arthur Weasley), and Mr. Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe.

Back in May, we filled you in on some tidbits from the set visit, but now we can share everything we learned about the last 'Harry Potter' movie. So, of course, fellow Muggles, if you haven't read the books, there are some spoilers ahead. Continue Reading

This Week in 1981: 'Polyester' Wafts Into Theaters

3D may be the gimmick of the moment, but 30 years ago this week (on May 29, 1981), John Waters came up with a different way to extend movies into a new dimension and make them more in-your-face. It was called Odorama, and his test vehicle, a movie you could smell, was 'Polyester.'

'Polyester' was a brave undertaking for Waters, previously known as the outsider auteur whose deliberately outrageous films (most notoriously 'Pink Flamingos') had been relegated to midnight-movie status. For the first time, he was courting the attention of the mainstream. He risked having both cult fans and mainstream critics tell the world that 'Polyester' stunk (often literally). And while none really dared follow his technical innovation, Waters did prove that the mainstream was ready for his idiosyncratic brand of satire -- and that he, in turn, was ready for mass acceptance, a transition he would complete with his next movie, 'Hairspray.'

'Horrible Bosses' Star Jason Sudeikis Named Host of 20th Annual MTV Movie Awards

Filed under: Movie News, Awards'Saturday Night Live' funnyman Jason Sudeikis will host this years MTV Movie Awards. The comedian, who is making a major play at movie stardom with roles in 'Hall Pass' and the upcoming comedy 'Horrible Bosses,' follows in the footsteps of 'Parks and Recreation' star Aziz Ansari, who helped last year's telecast record over 100 curse words, prompting an apology from MTV.

"I'm sincerely flattered that the folks from the Mostly Teenage Viewers network have invited me to host this year, and I look forward to keeping the streak of flawless and critically lauded movie-award-show hosting in 2011 alive," Sudeikis joked. He is, of course, making light of the critical pounding Oscar hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway received after this year's lethargic telecast and the backlash against Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais after he made several rough jokes at the expense of actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Angelina Jolie (both of whom were in the audience). Zooey Deschanel on 'Winnie the Pooh' & Crafting a Classic Disney Song

Filed under: Celebrity Interviews, Family Film Guide, Summer Movies, New Releases

While audiences are busy freaking out this weekend over the finale of the 'Harry Potter' saga, there's another children's book series that's also arriving on the big screen: 'Winnie the Pooh.' Pooh, Tigger and the cast of animals that inhabit the Hundred Acre Wood go on another series of adventures with Christopher Robin, in new adaptations of the original A.A. Milne classics.

For their latest animated feature, Disney added a contemporary spin to their classic approach -- and one of the unique elements involved with the new 'Winnie the Pooh' is the music of Zooey Deschanel. The actress best known for movies like 'Elf' and '(500) Days of Summer' splits her time between Hollywood and working with singer/songwriter M. Ward in the indie folk group, 'She & Him.'

Moviefone spoke with Deschanel about joining the pantheon of classic Disney soundtracks, the new sounds she brings to kids' movies and the legacy of her shower duet with Will Ferrell. Continue Reading

Hot Doc a Day: Alan Zweig's 'Vinyl'

Filed under: Documentaries, Hot Docs Film Festival, Moviefone Canada

Hot Docs, North America's biggest documentary film festival, kicks off its 2011 run on April 28 in Toronto. Jam-packed with documentaries running through May 8, Moviefone Canada will be there from start to finish, offering up looks at some of the festival's noted films.

When alt-comic/anti-hipster-schlubb Harvey Pekar suddenly pops onto the screen with no identifying credit in Alan Zweig's 'Vinyl,' it becomes clear how this documentary reached cult status.

The late creator of the superhero-free comic, 'American Splendor,' simply weighs in on music and relationships, just like everyone else does in 'Vinyl.' Watch a little closer and there's Canadian writer/actor Don McKellar, director Guy Maddin, Daniel Richler, Bruce LaBruce, and writer/columnist Geoff Pevere. Heck, Bruce MacDonald produced the thing. If these were the guys hanging with Zweig before he had an audience as a filmmaker, it's no wonder Hot Docs has decided to make his litany of projects the focus of the 2011 fest.

Other titles by Zweig at the fest include the 'Vinyl' sequels 'Loveable' and 'I Curmudgeon,' his 'Early Shorts,' the recent prison system doc 'A Hard Name,' and 'Vinyl: The Alternate Take.' Continue Reading

'Friends With Benefits': When Sex and Friendship Collide on Film

There's no escaping the concept of friends with benefits (FWB) these days. It has even inspired two big releases this year: 'No Strings Attached,' starring a 'Black Swan' diva and a former teen heartthrob, and 'Friends With Benefits,' starring, well, a 'Black Swan' diva and a former teen heartthrob.

The latter hits theaters this week, with Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis playing the FWBs in question. The two gravitate towards each other after they're dumped by their respective mates (Emma Stone and Andy Samberg). Neither wants a big commitment after being burned, so they make a pact to treat sex like it's no bigger deal than a friendly game of tennis.

Matthew Lewis Chats With Us About Neville's Journey and Breaking the Sword of Gryffindor

In 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,' the character of Neville Longbottom (played by Matthew Lewis) finally emerges as the brave leader that his placement in Gryffindor House promised so many years ago. It's been quite a trip for Neville, having started out as a very timid first-year who could barely keep track of his pet toad, Trevor.

Along the way, he joined Dumbledore's Army and learned to defend himself and his friends against dark magic, even when it seemed crazy to think that this weakling of a boy could ever match the courage of his parents, former members of the Order of the Phoenix who were tortured to the point of insanity by the Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange.

Moviefone recently sat down with Matthew Lewis to hear his thoughts on closing out the long-running, super-successful 'Harry Potter' franchise, and he let us in on a secret or two. Check it out below, and if you missed it yesterday, here's our sit-down with Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley. (And check in tomorrow for our talk with Tom Felton, aka Draco Malfoy.) Check Out the First Trailer for Steven Soderbergh's 'Contagion' (VIDEO)

Filed under: Trailers and Clips, Movie News, Video, Coming Soon, Horror

Aside from the occasional casting update and a pretty uninspired poster, there hasn't been a whole lot to report on for Steven Soderbergh's upcoming directorial effort, 'Contagion.' But lo and behold, now we've finally got our hands on the awesome debut trailer, and we are totally on board.

From what we've gathered thus far, 'Contagion' looks to be about a woman who somehow contracts an incurable lethal virus that has its way with her and then starts spreading across the globe like wildfire. Before you know it, the human race has become an epidemic, people are bathing in Purell and wearing hazmat suits to work because everyone around them is dropping like flies, and no one from the government down knows how to stop it. But despite the insurmountable odds and the fact that planet Earth is quickly turning into one big containment zone, the woman's husband starts searching high and low for answers or a cure that will hopefully save the human race or, at the very least, his own life.

It's like 'Outbreak' mixed with 'Blindness,' and it looks pretty darn unsettling. Written by Scott Z. Burns ('The Bourne Ultimatum,' and 'The Informant!') and starring Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, and Bryan Cranston, we still have a couple months until its Sept. 9 release date, but the cards sure do seem to be in its favor at the moment.

Hit the jump to see the full creepy trailer for yourselves. Continue Reading

'Hobo with a Shotgun' Sundance Review: A Bindle of Laughs

'Hobo with a Shotgun'
is everything you'd want a film called 'Hobo with a Shotgun' to be, except that ideally you'd be watching it on a crusty VHS tape that you found in the back of an independent video store run by a weird guy with a ponytail.

In an era of too much campy self-awareness, too many grindhouse homages, and too much blood-for-blood's-sake, 'HWAS' is a breath of fresh, sleazy air. First-time director Jason Eisener, expanding on the fake trailer that he and writer John Davies made in 2007 as part of a contest, takes exactly the right tone, straddling the line between imitation and parody. 'HWAS' both makes fun of Troma-style exploitation movies and is one itself.

The key is to play it with a straight face. Luckily, Eisener has Rutger Hauer, the iconic veteran actor who seems like he ought to have been in a movie called 'Hobo with a Shotgun' already. Hauer shows in his performance that he knows what the joke is, but also that he knows not to let it show. He doesn't wink at the audience, but he isn't a clueless old man, either. He gets it.

Why We Love the Golden Globes

Filed under: Golden Globes News, Awards

As much as we love the Oscars, when it comes to awards season, nobody does it better than the Golden Globes. It's the one time of year when the stars of both movies and television get all dressed up to hand out a few awards and throw back a few drinks.

Think about it: Is there a better combination than awards and alcohol? Not that we're proponents of excessive drinking, but if there's one thing we love most about the Globes, it's the way it feels more like a party than a stiff, four-hour-long awards show. (Sorry, Oscars.) Where else can you watch Isaac Mizrahi inappropriately touch Scarlett Johansson on the red carpet, or Renee Zellweger win an award while she's still in the bathroom? It's the best party in showbusiness. (Relive more memorable Golden Globes moments here.)

It's also the most unpredictable. Because it's the first major awards show of the year, nobody really knows what's going to happen, which often leads to a number of surprise upsets. Remember when Natalie Portman won in 2004? Or James Franco in 2002? The Golden Globes is about as predictable as the jokes from host Ricky Gervais. Continue Reading

Duncan Jones on 'Source Code,' Jumping Off Trains and 'Blade Runner'

Fans have been waiting awhile to watch Duncan Jones' eagerly-anticipated follow-up to 'Moon,' 'Source Code,' and they weren't disappointed when the film made its official debut on opening night of the 2011 SXSW Film Festival. Read our 'Source Code' review.

For Jones this was his first directorial outing for a major studio off a script he didn't write, but all you need is 10 minutes of 'Source Code' to convince you this guy is the real deal; a director we'll definitely want to keep an eye on in the years to come. 'Source Code' stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a soldier who wakes up to find himself in the body of some random dude who's eight minutes away from blowing up -- along with the train he's riding on -- thanks to a terrorist's bomb that's planted somewhere onboard.

A new experimental military program called 'Source Code' is what allows this soldier to take over the body of someone else, and it's up to him to try to identify the bomber (in eight-minute chunks) before he bombs someplace else. Cinematical sat down for a few minutes at SXSW with Duncan Jones, and spoke to him about the film, what he enjoyed most about making it, and where we can expect to see him go from here (hint: it won't be to one of those 'Blade Runner' prequels or sequels).

Watch our video chat after the jump, and you can scope out 'Source Code' when it hits theaters April 1st.

How Would John Carpenter's Vampire Hunters Fare vs. 'Twilight' Vampires?

Filed under: Features, The Twilight Saga, Horror

John Carpenter, whose new movie 'The Ward' opens this weekend, has been terrifying audiences since the 1970s with such classics as 'Halloween,' 'The Thing' and 'Christine.'

His 1998 film 'Vampires,' though, may have arrived around a decade too early. The current

'Twilight'-inspired vampire craze would likely have shot the film well past its $20 million box office take. While it occurs in a much darker world than Stephenie Meyer's depiction of sparkly vampires, it should still interest Twi-hards.

Why? The 'Vampires' series is about various vampire hunters who track and kill evil bloodsuckers. Edward Cullen and his like-minded "vegetarian" family do much the same thing in the first three installments of 'The Twilight Saga.'

Carpenter and Meyer should think about joining the two series a la 'Alien vs. Predator' or 'Freddy vs. Jason.' Were that to happen, these are the hunters from 'Vampires' -- 'Vampires: Los Muertos' and 'Vampires: The Turning' -- that the Cullens should team with to take down the evil Volturi. Continue Reading

Movies That Should Never Become Theme Park Rides

When the first 'Pirates of the Caribbean' was announced in 2002, we were skeptical at the notion of a movie based on a theme park ride. Three sequels and several billion dollars later, we admit we were wrong.

With yesterday's announcement of a Matterhorn film (based on the popular Disneyland coaster), and with the upcoming 'Haunted Mansion' and 'Magic Kingdom' now in production, it would appear this "look to theme parks for movie inspiration" thing is becoming a trend.

Before long, Hollywood will be pitching amusement parks to build rides based on movies. While King's Dominion's the Hurler, based on 'Wayne's World,' has already been done, we'd like to head the studio bigwigs off at the pass before they get too crazy.

Therefore, we present to you: Movies That Would Make the Worst Theme Park Rides.

Teresa Palmer on Romance, Blockbusters and Playing a Female Bad Ass

There are countless young actresses in Hollywood who are hovering on the verge of becoming the next big thing; each one of them possesses a certain indefinable something, and is poised for A-list immortality as soon as their big break syncs up with equally big box office returns. But Teresa Palmer isn't just waiting for that serendipitous convergence of preparation and opportunity, she's making it happen; and after watching her steal the end of the new film 'I Am Number Four,' you may find yourself wondering why she wasn't just given the film to begin with.

We sat down with Palmer at a Los Angeles press day for 'I Am Number Four,' in which she plays Number Six, an ass-kicker and name-taker who helps the title character come of age as a warrior in his own right. In addition to talking about the various physical challenges she faced while fleshing out her latest role, she offered some insights about her other upcoming role in the comedy 'Take Me Home Tonight,' and reflected on the trajectory her career has taken thus far - not to mention where she wants it to go. The British period drama, about King George VI's attempt to overcome his stammer, also walked away with awards for Best Director (Tom Hooper), Best Actor (Colin Firth) and Best Original Screenplay.

The film tied fellow Best Picture nominee 'Inception' in total Oscars, as the latter took home Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects.

Much to the surprise of no one, Natalie Portman took the stage to graciously accept the award for Best Actress for her performance as the insane ballet dancer Nina Sayers in 'Black Swan.' This is Portman's first win and second overall nomination. She was previously nominated for her performance in Mike Nichols' 2004 drama 'Closer.' Continue Reading

12 Fun (and Depressing) Stats From The 83rd Academy Awards

The 83rd Academy Awards are over, and not a minute too soon for most viewers. No major surprises in the big categories; even the most ardent believers in David Fincher cannot feign adequate shock that Best Director matched the Director's Guild choice for the 56 in 60 tries (not counting Steven Spielberg & Ron Howard who were not nominated after winning DGA, respectively, in 1985 & 1995.)

When Tom Hanks took the stage to introduce the first two awards of the night with a few nifty stats, it looked as if the Oscars were trying to steal the shtick of us Oscarwatching statisticians. Though really what kind of stat is a film winning Best Picture, Art Direction & Cinematography? An odd combo that means little to the numbers geeks and probably even less to the young viewers they were trying to court with their new hosts. The show pretty much dropped the stats game after Hanks' intro, but we thought we would dig a little to find a few more interesting tidbits, whether you like it or not.

Weinergate: Let's Cast the Inevitable Anthony Weiner Film

Filed under: Features, Hot Topic, Celebrity Gossip

It's the political scandal of the moment -- that is, until the next political scandal of the moment. New York congressman Anthony Weiner was busted for engaging in "inappropriate online exchanges with at least six women and repeatedly lying about sending a sexually suggestive photograph to a young woman over Twitter last month." (Somewhere, John Edwards is saying, "Oh, is that all?") In a summer of superheroes and precocious kids, Weiner stands out as, well, a wiener. And knowing Hollywood, that means a film about the formerly rising (Ding!) political star cannot be far behind. Ahead, Movieline offers five casting suggestions for the inevitable Weinergate. This Week in Movie History: 'Trainspotting' Smacks Moviegoers

Movie: 'Trainspotting'

Release Date: July 19, 1996

How It Got Made: Reading Irvine Welsh's 1993 literary sensation about the highs and lows of a group of Scottish junkies, director Danny Boyle and producer Andrew Macdonald believed they could invent a visual equivalent to the vibrant, urgent, shot-in-the-arm prose of Welsh's debut novel. "This has got to be the most energetic film you've ever seen," Boyle later told Entertainment Weekly, "about something that ultimately ends up in purgatory or worse."

Boyle's team secured the rights by convincing Welsh that they weren't going to try for gritty realism, like most movies about drug addiction; rather, they planned to make a movie as surreal, dreamlike, juiced-up, nightmarish, heartbreaking and funny as the novel. They succeeded, creating a movie generally regarded now as the best Scottish movie ever made, a picture that made stars out of Boyle, Ewan McGregor and the rest of the cast. It proved vastly influential even beyond the walls of the cinema; out on the presidential campaign trail, it reignited debate over whether the portrayal of drug use glamorizes addiction. Early Edition: Kevin Bacon Gets Evil for 'R.I.P.D.,' 'Gangster Squad' Picks Robert Patrick

Filed under:

A villain has finally materialized for Universal's 'R.I.P.D.': Kevin Bacon is in final talks to join the supernatural thriller about the Rest in Peace Department, a police force comprised of ghosts who battle spirits unready to depart this world. Ryan Reynolds stars as a recently slain cop who joins the force and proceeds to hunt down his murderer. Jeff Bridges co-stars as a gunslinger from the Old West who's been hunting spirits since the 1800s. The Robert Schwentke-directed film is based on the Dark Horse comic written by Peter M. Lenkov. [Variety]

Kathryn Bigelow's high-profile Navy Seal Team 6 project -- about the hunt for Osama bin Laden -- has been given a release date: Oct. 12, 2012, just in time for a big year-end Oscar run. Bigelow and 'The Hurt Locker' writer Mark Boal had been working on the Team 6's mission to get bin Laden when the Al-Qaeda leader was killed, necessitating a change in story direction (the film was to focus on the unsuccessful assassination attempts). During this year's Cannes Film Festival, buyers began to line up for the untitled project; it eventually landed at Sony. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Teresa Palmer on Romance, Blockbusters and Playing a Female Bad Ass

Filed under: Celebrity Interviews, Behind the Scenes, New Releases, Sci-Fi, Cinematical

Alec Baldwin Considering a Bid for NYC Mayor?

Filed under: Celebrity GossipFrom PopEater: Are we in for another dose of 'Will I or won't I?' Donald Trump-style celebrity politics, or is Alec Baldwin legitimately planning a run for mayor of New York? According to The Hollywood Reporter, the '30 Rock' boss may be interested in throwing his hat into the New York mayoral election ring now that Rep. Anthony Weiner's Twitter scandal has most likely deterred him from running.

"Alec said, 'Hey, maybe this changes the race. The dynamics have shifted," a friend of the actor told The Daily. "The Democrats need a high-profile candidate, and Alec can fill that bill."

And a high-profile candidate he is, the actor's Twitter account was on fire Wednesday afternoon after he tweeted, "It's a long way till November of 2013." Continue Reading

Christian Bale Rocks a Frock in '13 Women of Nanjing'

Filed under: Movie Photos, Movie News
Christian Bale made one of the most kick-ass clerics we've ever seen in 'Equilibrium,' but he's playing a different brand of heroic priest in the upcoming 'The 13 Women of Nanjing.'

A new image of Bale on the set with Chinese director Zhang Yimou ('Hero,' 'Raise the Red Lantern') has just been released (see it and other images after the jump).

The recently wrapped film tells the tale of an American priest who takes refuge in a church with 13 prostitutes and a group of schoolgirls as the Japanese invade in 1937. Various heroics, we imagine, ensue.

It's familiar territory for Bale, who played a British lad trying to survive in Japanese-occupied China in 1941 in Steven Spielberg's 'Empire of the Sun.' And, as a pre-cowl Bruce Wayne, Bale was in China mastering the martial arts in 'Batman Begins,' time very well spent, we'd say. Continue Reading

Shia LaBeouf's Most Outrageous Statements on Megan Fox, Being an 'A-Hole' and More

Filed under: Hot Topic, Summer Movies, New Releases, Celebrity Gossip

Shia LaBeouf is determined to cement his reputation as a Hollywood bad boy with a new interview in Details magazine, where he admits to hooking up with Megan Fox, trashing his directors, throwing down on tough guy Tom Hardy and more.

LaBeouf seems to be channeling his inner Charlie Sheen as he says, "I would like to be George Clooney -- diplomatic. I just don't have the wherewithal yet or the inner serenity. My bullsh*t meter is tuned very sensitive."

As for his dalliance with Fox, LaBeouf says, "Look, you're on the set for six months, with someone who's rooting to be attracted to you, and you're rooting to be attracted to them. I never understood the separation of work and life in that situation. But the time I spent with Megan was our own thing, and I think you can see the chemistry onscreen."

And what about Fox's now-husband Brian Austin Green? "I don't know, man. I don't know. I don't know ... It was what it was," is all the actor says.

'Robin Hood' (2010) Quotes

Filed under: Movie Quotes In the latest retelling of the classic Robin Hood tale, director Ridley Scott takes the literary adventure and mixes it with heart-pounding war sequences to create an action-pack prequel to the commonly told folk story. Russell Crowe plays the role of a common archer named Robin Longstride who, through a series of unexpected requests and good deeds, agrees to take on the name and livelihood of Sir Robert Loxley in order to save Maid Marion Loxley's (Cate Banchett) farm. It takes fighting with Prince John (Oscar Issac), the French army and finally an ultimate betrayal to push "Robin of the Hood" into the woods to play the role of the beloved outlaw. Continue Reading

New Footage From the 'Blade' Anime Finally Arrives (VIDEO)

Filed under: Movie News, Video, Horror, Sci-Fi

From ComicsAlliance: It's been almost two years since the initial announcement of Marvel's 'X-Men,' 'Wolverine,' 'Iron Man' and 'Blade' Madhouse anime projects, but the line will finally come full circle as everybody's favorite vampire slayer's series debuts in Japan on July 1. Animax has launched a new website providing a look at the series' cast of characters, along with a short video teaser.

While the 'Blade' anime hasn't received an official release date in North America or an localized English dub cast, the Japanese staff seems pretty interesting. Directing is Mitsuyuki Masuhara with a script by 'Battle Royale' movie franchise veteran Kenta Fukasuka.

Story details are also fairly sparse, but shoddy online translations of the site's Japanese text make it pretty clear that Blade will be teaming up with a young vampire hunter from Japan, plus Noah Van Helsing (of the Helsings!) and his awesome dog Razor against the evil Deacon Frost and his minions in Asia. Good guys vs. bad guys in a cool part of the world? Seems pretty solid so far.

Funniest Quotes from 'Easy A'

Filed under:

'Easy A''Easy A' follows the life of Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone) as an obscure no-body to the popular it-girl at her high school, basically a modern day version of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Scarlett Letter. When her best friend Rhiannon (Alyson Michalka) asks Olive how her weekend went, she decides to whip up a spicy white lie about losing her virginity. But the mild exaggeration takes on a life of its own after it reaches the ears of rumor monger and Jesus freak Marianne (Amanda Bynes), and now Olive has the reputation as the easiest lay in school. With witty dialog and a great cast this comedy is sure to make you re-examine social networking, gossip and public persons.

Here are some of the best quotes from 'Easy A':

Brandon (Dan Byrd): "Do you wanna go out with me?"
Olive: "Brandon, just a couple of hours ago you told me you were gay."
Brandon: "You said I should pretend to be straight."
Olive: "I didn't mean with me!"
Brandon: "I am tormented every day at school. Just one good, imaginary fling."

Olive: "The rumors of my promiscuity have been greatly exaggerated."

Rhiannon: "George is not a sexy name. George is like what you name your teddy bear, not the name you wanna scream out during climax."

Olive: "We've had nine classes together since Kindergarten...ten if you count Religion of Other Cultures, which you didn't because you called it science fiction and refused to go."

Marianne (Amanda Bynes): "You've made your bed...I just hope for your sake, you've cleaned the sheets."

Mrs. Griffith: "He's not the sharpest Christian in the bible."

Nina: "Perhaps you should embroider a red "A" on your wardrobe, you abominable tramp."
Olive: "Perhaps you should get a wardrobe you abominable twat."

Brandon: "So, what's with your new look? It's very whore couture."

Principle Gibbons (Malcolm McDowell): "This is public school, if I can keep the girls off the pole and the boys off the pipe...I get a bonus."

Mrs. Griffith (Lisa Kudrow): "I'm the guidance counselor; I should know all the students, especially the ones that dress like prostitutes."

Rhiannon: "You're being pretty cavalier about this. Aren't you supposed to be eternally in love with him and shit."
Olive: "Yes...I believe so, if I was the Gossip Girl in Sweet Valley of the Traveling Pants."

Olive: "Relax. Jesus. What is with you gays? Are you really that repulsed by lady parts? What do you think I have down there? A gnome?"

Marianne: "Jesus tells us to love everyone, even the whores and the homosexuals. But it's so hard, it's so hard because they keep doing it, over and over again."

Olive: "Whatever happened to chivalry? Does it only exist in 80's movies? I want John Cusack holding a boombox outside my window. I wanna ride off on a lawnmower with Patrick Dempsey. I want Jake from Sixteen Candles waiting outside the church for me. I want Judd Nelson thrusting his fist into the air because he knows he got me. Just once I want my life to be like an 80's movie, preferably one with a really awesome musical number for no apparent reason. But no, no, John Hughes did not direct my life."

Olive: "If he's so smart, why is your boyfriend 22 years old and still in high school?"
Marianne: "Because, Olive, it's His choice!"
Olive: "Oh, really? His choice? He just wants to be repeating his senior year for, like, the fourth time 'cause he can't pass a single test?"
Marianne: "No, silly,"
[points up]
Marianne: "His. His, with a capital H. If the Good Lord had wanted Micah to graduate, he would have given him the right answers."
Olive: [laughs] "I'm sorry, but, I mean, really? You gotta be sh*tt*n' me, sister."

Mr. Griffith (Thomas Haden Church): "I don't know what your generation's fascination is with documenting your every thought...but I can assure you, they're not all diamonds. "Roman is having an OK day, and bought a Coke Zero at the gas station. Raise the roof." Who gives a rat's ass?"

Dill (Stanley Tucci): "The family member of the week gets to pick the movie."
Olive:
"You get family member of the week every week."
Rosemary
(Patricia Clarkson): "And there's a reason for that."
Olive:
"Yeah, you pick family member of the week!"
Rosemary:
"Are you accusing me of nepotism?"

Olive: "I want a one hundred dollar gift card deposited into my locker by noon tomorrow. Preferably to The Gap, but I'd also take Amazon.com, or Office Max. Actually make it Office Max - I have my eye on a label maker. We did not have sex. I let you fondle my chest, and it was a glorious moment for you. Unmatched by anything you have heretofore experienced...including cake."

Olive: "That's the one thing that trumps religion...capitalism."

2011: The Year of Rutger Hauer's Badass Comeback

Filed under: Hot Topic, Movie Quotes, Cinematical

When it was announced yesterday that veteran actor Rutger Hauer would be joining Dario Argento's 3D adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic novel 'Dracula,' it was the final piece of evidence needed to prove that one of my greatest dreams was coming true: Yes, folks, Rutger Hauer is back.

Honestly, Hauer never really left; it's just that recent years have found the actor working in foreign productions overseas as Hollywood has moved on to a younger (and in most cases, blander) generation of stars. Sure, Rutger was never exactly an A-lister (although he did make THR's list of the 50 most bankable actors in the world in the late '80s), and he's appeared in his fair share of bad films over the years (e.g., 'Wedlock'), but he's an instantly recognizable face to film fans for his work in titles like 'The Hitcher,' 'Blade Runner' (probably his finest hour) and 'Turkish Delight.'

2011 is shaping up to be the year of the Hauer renaissance. Aside from playing Van Helsing in Argento's film -- which is perfect casting -- the 67-year-old Dutch actor also had two films appear at Sundance. Both were well received.

The first, 'The Mill & the Cross' finds Hauer playing artist Peter Breugel, while '80s-styled exploitation throwback 'Hobo With a Shotgun' casts him in the lead role as a homeless man cleaning up the streets with extreme prejudice. If that weren't enough, the actor also had a supporting part (starring alongside Anthony Hopkins, another actor who's played Van Helsing) in Warner Bros.' supernatural thriller 'The Rite.' It feels like we're witnessing a Mickey Rourke-type comeback here. Continue Reading

'Cowboys & Aliens' Review: Part Western, Part Alien Invasion, All Disappointment

Back in November of 2010 when we first saw the trailer for 'Cowboys & Aliens' in a theater packed to the brim with people waiting to see 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1,' two things happened. First, everyone was quiet because it clearly looked awesome thanks to Jon Favreau's involvement, Harrison Ford talking like he just smoked 40 packs of cigarettes at once, and Daniel Craig punching fools out before shooting down UFOs with a pimped-out metal bracelet. Then, after being completely glued to the screen for two minutes, the title came up on the screen and everyone burst out in laughter like the words "Farts & Farts" just appeared.

Ever since then, we've been trying to convince ourselves to focus on the first thing and forget about the second, but now that we've finally gotten to see it for ourselves, go right ahead and check out whether this is unlikely mashup had us cheering in the aisles or left us blinded with its stupidity.

New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of May 31: 'Drive Angry' and 'Biutiful'

There's two decidedly different films due on the home entertainment front this week: For mind-numbing action post-Memorial Day there's 'Drive Angry,' the latest Nicolas Cage saga in which the star once again plays a hero facing impossible odds and impossible villains as he fights for truth, justice and a strong backend deal. Way at the other end of the movie spectrum is Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's very depressing (but ultimately uplifting) 'Biutiful,' which highlights a bravura performance by Oscar-nominated Javier Bardem as a conflicted man facing his own mortality in the seedy underbelly of Barcelona. Healthy Michael Douglas Gets Standing Ovation at Globes (VIDEO)

Filed under: Video, Golden Globes NewsFrom TV Replay: Michael Douglas, who is currently cancer free after a recent struggle with advanced stage IV throat cancer, received a very touching standing ovation when he appeared at 'The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards' (Sun., 8PM on NBC). He was on hand to present the last award of the night.

When Douglas was announced, he strode confidently on stage. He still looked notably thinner than usual, but was otherwise happy and clearly humbled by the response. For nearly a full minute, the crowd of who's who in Hollywood were on their feet in praise of his strength, resilience and importance to their chosen medium.

Repeating "Thank you" over and again, Douglas tried to calm the crowd. We began to wonder if the orchestra might play him off just to keep the show in under time, even though he wasn't an award winner. Continue Reading
