Mel Gibson has been largely absent from the publicity push for his new movie 'The Beaver' so far, but he's now expected to appear at Cannes when the film screens out of competition on May 17.

Thierry Desmichelle, CEO of SND, the film's French distributor, announced on Friday that "Mel Gibson is coming to Cannes." But a spokesman for the actor disputes that, saying Gibson currently has no plans to attend. He didn't rule out the possibility of an appearance, however, saying that the actor is trying to work out schedule conflicts to make it happen.
Gibson did not attend 'The Beaver''s world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March, but he did appear at a press conference held by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association earlier this week.
