We love us some good horror here at Moviefone, though it's been a while since we've had anything worth getting excited over. Sure, the promise of another haunted-house movie has us cursing the day 'Paranormal Activity' made it to theaters, but 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark' is no ordinary haunted-house movie. Adapted from the 1973 made-for-TV movie of the same name, co-written and produced by Guillermo Del Toro and directed by newcomer Troy Nixey, the story follows as such:
A shy little girl (Bailee Madison) moves into a 19th-century fixer-upper mansion with her father (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Katie Holmes). Soon after they settle in and start stripping the wallpaper, the little girl happens upon the mansion's creepy basement and accidentally lets loose a horde of evil creatures who want her all for themselves. And so begin her efforts to convince her dad and his main squeeze that the house is as haunted as it looks before the evil creatures prove it to them the hard way.
